Safety comes first
Safety comes first in Tirol

All footpaths and hiking routes are marked using standard signposting: trail signs are yellow, markings are red-white-red. In addition all trails are color-coded according to difficulty.

Red Trails are moderately difficult trails suitable for reasonably fit hikers; basic hiking equipment is required.

Black Trails are rated difficult and require a good head for heights as well as sure-footedness.

If you are interested in exploring the outdoors here, but don't know where to go or don't want to hike alone, it’s best to enlist the services of a licensed guide. Many guides organize regular group hikes to the region’s most beautiful spots. Group walks are not only safer, they are also a lot of fun!

Mine Experience Trail
Location: Oberndorf
Total distance: 1,5 km
Difficulty: easy
Duration ca: 30 minutes
Family friendly: Yes
Suitable for pushchairs: Yes

Oberndorf achieved prominence during the 16th century when the hilly district of Bichlach, west of the town, began to develop the mining capacities at Rerobichl. This produced one of the largest copper deposits in Europe, with significant amounts of silver also discovered.

Salt was also found here – the brine was brought to Oberndorf in salt pans to be processed. In order to extract the valuable mineral the miners had to dig deep shafts. The 877 m deep Heiliggeistschacht (Holy Spirit shaft) was considered the deepest shaft in Europe between 1597 – 1872. The Rerobichl mine employed up to 2,000 people on a temporary basis. In 1774, it was forced to close after a series of serious mining accidents and a drop in revenue.

Several attempts were made to revive the mine, the last effort being in 1963. However none of these plans came to fruition. Discover the history of mining in Oberndorf along the mining experience trail....

Forest Experience Trail
Location: Oberndorf
Total distance: 1,5 km
Difficulty: easy

Family friendly: Yes
Suitable for pushchairs: No

Bichlach is particularly inspiring and therefore an area the Oberndorf municipality considers worth protecting. The region offers a range of ecological attractions such as wetlands and bogs, which always provide a great source of delight for hikers and nature lovers.

Bichlach also has an ancient glacier, which remains intact. As part of a biology project, the pupils of Kufstein Grammer School analysed the various fauna and flora in Bichlach and designed a forest experience trail. The trembling poplar, fly honeysuckle and common juniper are only a few of the many species of trees and shrubs along this beautiful circuit trail.

Moor & more
The Holiday Region Kitzbüheler Alps St. Johann in Tirol – Oberndorf – Kirchdorf – Erpfendorf offers a wide range of natural resources and marvellous scenes. One of those scenes, the raised moss in St. Johann in Tirol, has been converted to an „natural“ adventure park.

Around the Gasthof Römerhof there is a huge raised moss with typical flora and fauna, which is unique in Europe.

The existing forest roads and hiking trails has been extended and are suitable for wheel chairs and prams. Themeboards explain the characteristics of the moss. From observation desks like on Hüttelmoos the visitors have a marvellous view over the nature. Furthermore the park offers an adventure playground and an “open air classroom”.
